When thieves broke into the top Italian winery Col d'Orcia in Montalcino, they got hold of around 1000 rare Brunello wines with a value of well over 100,000 euros. The stolen wines were mainly from well rated vintages up to 1964, plus rarities such as Poggio al Vento Riserva 1997 and 1999. The estate owner Francesco Marone Cinzano said the burglars must have had good knowledge of their prey, as they had proceeded very purposefully. The loot had been transported in a van stolen the night before. The vehicle had been found empty in Perugia.

Due to the frequent break-ins in the region, the police had decided to monitor the main roads in the wine region with 110 cameras in the future, which would also enable automatic license plate recognition.
