VDP President Steffen Christmann founds a premium sparkling wine company in Gimmeldingen (Palatinate) together with his daughter Sophie and the renowned sparkling wine producer Mathieu Kauffmann. Kauffmann worked for many years as a winemaker at the Bollinger champagne house and, until recently, in the same position at the VDP company Reichsrat von Buhl in Deidesheim. The project is also financed by other investors.

According to the parties involved, the construction of a sparkling wine plant on the outskirts of Gimmeldingen has been in planning for some time. The grapes will come from the twelve hectares of vineyards which Christmann recently leased from the neighboring Mugler winery. These include areas in some of the top locations in the Palatinate. Christmann and Kauffmann want to convert the vineyards to biodynamic cultivation. Steffen and Sophie Christmann want to develop the base wines of the 2019 vintage on their own farm.

The sparkling wines are to be established in the premium segment, remain on the lees for at least 15 to 18 months and be available from around 20 euros. Layer sparkling wines should mature for five to ten years on the bottle. The first sparkling wines are to be sold in 2021.

Mathieu Kauffmann will join the company in spring 2020. According to the "Weinwirtschaft" he is planning a second project, the details of which are not yet known.
