The People's Republic of China has officially been appointed as the 51st member of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). This concludes the legally mandated six-month consultation phase. The acceptance of the application must now still be ratified by the Chinese authorities within a year. During this time, however, China is already entitled to participate in the work of the OIV.
China is the country with the third-largest vineyard area in the world. It is also the largest producer of table grapes on Earth and ranks eighth in global wine consumption.
With China's accession, the representativeness of the organization rises to 85 percent of the world's planted vineyard area.
