Aubert & Mathieu

The first wine designed by the artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT according to the specifications of a wine shop has been presented in France. Anthony Aubert and Jean-Charles Mathieu from Aubert & Mathieu asked the AI platform to create an "exceptional, fruity vinified organic wine from the Languedoc region with the grape varieties Grenache and Syrah". They also asked what the wine should be called, in which bottle and at what price.

"His answers on vinification and blending according to the characteristics of the grape varieties - colour, tannins, fruit - are amazing," explains Aubert. According to the instructions, they combined "60 per cent Grenache and 40 per cent Syrah, which normally make a fruity and balanced wine, but you can reverse the proportions to get a more tannic wine," ChatGPT recommended. The AI recommended a Burgundy bottle as "excellent to show off your wine" and a retail price between €50 and €100. "That's the one point where we won't follow it," says Anthony Aubert. The IGP cuvée Pays d'Oc "The End" will only cost about 20 euros.

ChatGPT also developed a marketing plan, a press release and the text for the back label. However, the AI made a few mistakes in the process. The programme also failed with the design of the label. According to Aubert, the name "The End" and the emptiness of the label now symbolise "the end of the possibilities that opened up for us through the use of AI". The 600 bottles of "The End" are only being distributed via the internet as a test.
