In Bordeaux, a winery is currently testing a new satellite technology for real-time monitoring. It detects the smallest changes in the health status of the vines before they become visible in the vineyard. This is reported by the British industry magazine Drinks Business. In the project, the organically managed Château Puybarbe collaborates with the satellite analysis company Kuva Space. The technology of hyperspectral imaging shows early signs of stress in plants caused by fungal infestation, insect activity, and changes in water or nutrient balance. For this purpose, hundreds of spectral bands are captured, making the smallest biochemical and structural changes in plants visible. The data obtained is intended to help detect problems earlier and thus reduce the workload and associated costs for plant protection. Until now, the use of hyperspectral imaging in agriculture has been difficult due to high costs. However, modern small satellites are significantly cheaper and make more applications possible in everyday life.
For Kuva Space, vineyards are a particularly interesting testing ground, as even small physiological changes can affect grape quality. This allows the company to gain important insights for precision agriculture. For wine producers, this should enable earlier detection of disease risks, more accurate mapping, and more targeted use of resources.
