The Châteaux Ausone and Cheval Blanc, which have been classified as Premier Grands Crus Classés 'A' since the introduction of the classification of Saint-Emilion in 1954, want to do without this distinction in the future. The directors Pierre Lurton of Cheval Blanc and Pauline Vauthier of Ausone explain this spectacular step as follows: "The terroir and tasting part was too small compared to tourism or social networks. The classification also only assesses the wines of the last fifteen years, but great wines should be considered over a much longer period. We don't find ourselves in these criteria, they are too far removed from what seems fundamental to us: terroir, wine and history." The next classification of Saint-Emilion wineries is due to take place in 2022, and applications are already underway.
