The turnover and sales volume of champagne in Germany increased in 2016. This was announced by the Champagne General Association (CIVC). The winegrowers and houses of Champagne exported 12.49 million bottles of champagne to Germany last year. Compared to the export volume of 11.91 million bottles in 2015, this represents an increase of 4.9 percent. Champagne export sales in Germany rose by 3.4 percent in 2016.

According to the CIVC, Germany is thus the third largest foreign market for champagne after Great Britain and the USA. Slightly more than half of the champagne produced is consumed in France itself: In 2016, French consumption was 51.6 percent, again falling slightly in favour of exports. In recent years, the export share has climbed continuously from 38.4 percent in 2009 to the current 48.4 percent.

According to CIVC information, a total of 306.04 million bottles of champagne were exported to more than 190 countries worldwide in 2016, which corresponds to a decline of 2.1 percent compared to 2015. Global champagne sales fell by 0.6 percent, so that the value per bottle developed positively. Champagne producers delivered 77.31 million bottles to countries in the European Union last year, 3.5 percent less than in the previous year. At 70.77 million bottles, champagne exports to markets outside the EU were 0.3 percent higher than in 2015.

According to the CIVC, Austria ranks 18th in the export market statistics with 1.31 million bottles of champagne; from 2015 to 2016, sales increased by 6.4 per cent and turnover by as much as 8.9 per cent.
