In Champagne, the managing director of a service company for wineries was sentenced to two years in prison and an additional year on probation. He was found guilty of having accommodated around 40 Ukrainian seasonal workers under "undignified conditions" in 2023. This is reported by the trade magazine La Revue du Vin de France and the news agency AFP.

The prefecture of the Marne department ordered the closure of the accommodation on September 8, 2023. According to a report from the labor inspection, the premises were "neglected and unclean." Toilets, sanitary facilities, and common areas were in a "disgusting state." The now-convicted individual admitted to "negligence" during the trial. However, he placed the main blame on the former co-managing director, who organized the accommodation of the Ukrainians. This person was not charged.

In addition to the prison sentence, the man received a lifetime ban on managing companies. Furthermore, the court imposed a fine of 350,000 euros on his company. The secretary-general of the trade union organization CGT Champagne commented on the verdict: "To prevent such things from happening again, clients must be made aware and jointly condemned."
