The re-elected president of the DO Cava, Javier Pagés, has set himself the goal of raising the reputation of Cava internationally and making it one of the "highest quality sparkling wines in the world". Pagés therefore wants to push ahead with a strategic plan for the DO during his second term in office. This includes the establishment of the designations Cavas de Guarda Superior (Reserva, Gran Reserva and Paraje Calificado), as well as sustainability initiatives. The zoning of vineyards and areas is intended to emphasise their uniqueness.

Around 6,800 winegrowers cultivate grapes for Cava, which is the most important Spanish export wine variety, on more than 38,000 hectares of vineyards. 71 percent of sales go abroad. The 350 wineries are represented in more than 100 countries. The most important export market is Germany, followed by the USA, Belgium, Great Britain and Japan.

2021 was the most successful year for DO Cava. 252 million bottles were sold, an increase of more than 17 per cent compared to 2020.
