The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture has increased the area under vines for grape varieties for cava production by 170 hectares. The decision was made against the will of the Cava Control Council, the Spanish daily El Pais reports. According to the current EU regulations of 2016, the area under cultivation may increase by this amount each year.
At present 34,000 hectares of cava grapes are grown in Spain, 29,000 hectares of this area are in Catalonia. The increase is therefore only 0.5 percent. However, the Cava Control Council currently fears an overproduction with possibly falling prices for the base wines. The committee is therefore now proposing to reduce the 0.5 percent expansion to 0.1 percent in the coming years.
