Wine bottles made of paper are being used more and more and are proving to be extremely popular. The Umbrian winery Cantina Goccia has now bottled some of its wines in bottles made from recycled cardboard by the British company Frugalpac and sold out in no time. Ceri Parke, owner of Cantina Goccia, told France's Vitisphere: "We had made great strides in the vineyard to reduce our ecological footprint, but packaging was still the weak point. Northern European countries are particularly receptive to the bottles, as are Japan and Canada, with very specific targets for packaging recycling."
The Frugal bottles took five years to develop. They are made from recycled cardboard without chemicals, weigh 83 grams - five times less than a glass bottle - have up to six times less carbon footprint and can be fully disassembled for recycling. Inside, they are equipped like bag-in-box cartons. The price for 1,000 bottles currently ranges from 600 to 1,000 euros, depending on volume, print type and design.
