In Napa Valley, wineries protect their vines against the sun and intense heat with kaolin clay. The chalky, white natural product is sprayed directly onto the vine leaves. According to Australian studies, it is said to effectively lower the temperature of the berries and also significantly reduce UV exposure. This keeps the leaf canopy intact, which provides additional protection for the grapes.

Winegrowers in the Californian growing region have again struggled with the effects of extreme heat in the vineyards this summer. The temperature peaks there now reach almost 50 degrees Celsius.
