Burgundy is in a favorable position in 2024 despite low yields, growing in domestic and export markets. This was announced by the head of the industry association "Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne" (BIVB), Laurent Delauney, during the auction at the Hospices de Beaune.
Export volume increased by 4.6 percent in the first seven months of 2024 compared to the previous year. Revenue was up by 3.7 percent, exceeding 900 million euros for the first time in a decade, reaching almost 926 million euros. In the USA, volume grew by 7.4 percent and revenue by 14.6 percent, in Canada by nine and eight percent. China has seen a 35 percent increase in volume since the beginning of the year and is the seventh-largest export market by value and the eighth-largest by volume. Sweden has overtaken Belgium and ranks fifth among the key markets behind the USA, the UK, Canada, and Japan. These five countries account for nearly 60 percent of the volume and half of the export revenue. The three emerging markets Australia, Korea, and Brazil have been identified as new focal points for the Bourgogne Wine Board Program.
In France, the sold volume increased by 3.2 percent in the first seven months, and the value rose by 2.4 percent. Delauney attributes the increases to global demand for Burgundies and reasonable prices. He expressed concerns about fluctuating production volumes, particularly for white wines due to frosts and other weather events. The BIVB is therefore supporting several research projects to adapt vineyards and winemaking to the challenging conditions.
