Désirée Steinheuer from Steinheuer's Restaurant Zur Alten Post in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler has been awarded Sommelier of the Year 2025 by Gault&Millau. "The unique blend of a stunning selection of the world's greatest, aged wines and the best that the region currently has to offer can only be achieved through constant exchange," the laudation stated. Conveying both highly knowledgeable pairings or recommendations to guests is an art that only a few master as perfectly as Désirée Steinheuer.
For the second time, Gault&Millau and "Henris Edition" have awarded the best wine lists in Germany. The lists are examined by an expert jury led by Otto Geisel and evaluated from various perspectives. A focus is on the creativity and individuality of the wine selection. Jordan (Deidesheim), Ösch Noir (Donaueschingen), Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer (Berlin), Kronenschlösschen (Eltville am Rhein), Schwarzer Adler (Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl), Kaupers im Kapellenhof (Selzen), Malathounis (Kernen im Remstal), Museum (Munich) as well as Johannas in Munich.
As Chef of the Year, the Palatinate-born Benjamin Peifer from Restaurant Intense in Wachenheim has been honored. He offers his guests a "holistic experience at the highest level," according to the jury. The award ceremony took place on Monday evening at the Brasserie Cuvilliés in Rosewood Munich.
In parallel to Gault&Millau Germany, the Michelin Guide was published in Austria for the first time in 16 years. The Service Award was given to Barbara Eselböck from Taubenkobel in Schützen am Gebirge in Burgenland, while Julian Stieger from Chef’s Table in the Red Wall in Zug near Lech (Vorarlberg) was delighted with the Young Chef award.
Among the three-star restaurants, there was an upgrade for Steirereck by Birgit and Heinz Reitbauer in Vienna. Juan Amador defended his three stars for the fifth time. 18 restaurants were awarded two stars each, previously there were only five in Austria.
