Domenico Clerico, one of Barolo's most influential and well-known winemakers, died on 16 July at the age of 67.
In 1976, he took over responsibility for his family's farm, which grew four hectares of grapes and sold them to the local cooperative. He quickly gained a reputation as a "modernist" through his unusual methods, which were new at the time. At that time, he was the first to use very long maceration times and to age the wines in barriques. From 1977 onwards, he bought vineyard plots in the best locations and produced excellent Barolo wines in the then new style. Today, 21 hectares with a capacity of 100 bottles belong to the farm.
Domenico Clerico is survived by his wife Giuliana, who will continue to run the winery with his companions Gianmatteo Rainieri and Oscar Arrivabene.
