Barolo will have its own official en-primeur event from 2024. This was confirmed by the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani after the success of its second charity auction at the Castello di Grinzane Cavour at the end of October. The auction raised a total of 769,800 euros for charity. Each barrique had an estimated value of 30,000 euros, with the record lot fetching 45,000 euros. The tonneaux even sold for 175,000 euros.

Matteo Ascheri, president of the consortium, told the trade magazine drinksbusiness.com that Barolo en primeur in the future should become the official date for journalists, buyers and collectors. In addition, there will be some barrel tastings for wineries that want to present their new vintages. According to Ascheri, this will have a positive effect on the entire appellation.

The director of the consortium, Andrea Ferrero, said: "We make sure that more and more producers take part in this action to help people in need and to create an ever larger community of Barolo lovers who are able to discover the many facets of this great wine appellation."

Currently, the charity auction is a unique opportunity to purchase a Barolo en primeur. The project was launched by the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation of Cuneo in collaboration with the CRC Donare Fondazione and with the support of the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani as the first project in Italy to sell wines en primeur for charity. The first sale in 2021 raised over 600,000 euros.
