Austrian sparkling wine will in future be marketed with the new designation "Sekt Austria". This was announced by the Austrian Sparkling Wine Committee on the occasion of the Gala for the Day of Austrian Sparkling Wine on 21 October. This designation is intended to position the sparkling wine more clearly internationally and to emphasise its origin as well as the tested quality by its own tasting commission.
Sales of Austrian sparkling wine increased by 26 per cent in the first half of 2021, also surpassing the level of 2019. Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM)-Chef Chris Yorke reported that the export value even increased by 45 per cent in the same period, but stressed that only 30 per cent of sparkling wines drunk there originate from Austria and that there is still a lot of potential especially in the gastronomy sector. There, the ÖWM wants to help guests get to know the many different ways to enjoy the wine. At the gala, actress Kristina Sprenger, known from the TV series "SOKO Kitzbühel", was elected Austrian Sparkling Wine Ambassador.
