The Austrian supermarket chain Billa finances five projects in viticulture and nature conservation with a total of 250,000 Euros through its non-profit private foundation "Blühendes Österreich" until 2026. Billa, which belongs to the German Rewe Group, enables five initiatives to advance species protection and biodiversity projects on a total of 533 hectares. The winners were selected from 14 applications by a jury. The winning projects come from the Donnerskirchen Winegrowers' Association (picture), the Krems Winegrowers' Cooperative, and private associations.
Vineyards and the surrounding landscape structures provide habitats for many plant and animal species. The foundation "Blühendes Österreich" supports projects that practice sustainable viticulture and thus contribute to responsible food production, explained a board member. Since 2015, Blühendes Österreich has already protected 1,100 hectares of valuable biotopes, according to its own statements.
A biodiversity project in the Vienna vineyards is co-financed by the washing and cleaning agent company Henkel with 17,500 Euros.
