According to the figures of ÖWM, Austria's wine export turnover will also increase significantly in 2016, although the dynamic growth has been slowed down in the past five years by a series of quantitatively weak harvests. Despite lower sales of cask wine, strong increases in sales of bottled wine resulted in an overall increase of more than 3 percent or 4.5 million euros. Quality white wines in bottles increased by over 6 million euros.

The main reason for the pleasing export development is said to be customers outside the European Union: Switzerland including Liechtenstein, the USA, Norway, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia were the leaders. With an increase of almost 12 %, US exports exceeded the 12 million euro mark for the first time. Quality wine exports to Germany also increased. The Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden reported an increase in the import value of Austrian wine of over 10% for 2016. Among the other EU countries, sales in the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, Denmark, Slovakia, Poland and Ireland also rose strongly. (uka)
