Hospices de Beaune

The 164th auction of the Hospices de Beaune achieved 14 million euros. This is significantly below the results of previous years (2022: 31 million euros, 2023: 23 million euros), however, the average price of a 228-liter barrel rose by 2.5 percent to 31,540 euros. This corresponds to about 110 euros per bottle. While 753 barrels were auctioned in 2023, this year only 439 barrels were sold due to difficult weather conditions and a small harvest – one of the smallest quantities in the past four decades. Overall, it is the fourth-best result of the auction ever. While the prices for red wines fell by five percent, they rose for white wines by eight percent. A barrel of Bâtard-Montrachet-Cuvée even set a new record at 355,000 euros. For a barrel of Echezaux Grand Cru, 175,000 euros were paid.

The so-called "Pièce des Présidents", the only barrel whose proceeds do not benefit the hospital of Beaune, was auctioned for 360,000 euros. The money goes to two organizations represented locally by well-known actors. The Spanish NGO Global Gift Foundation, which advocates for disadvantaged children, was represented by Jean Reno and Eva Longoria, while the NGO "Doctors Without Borders" was represented by Dominic West and Zabou Breitman. Overall, the result of the auction is seen as a sign that despite the difficult vintage, there should not be a price drop.
