The well-known 90-year-old Bordeaux entrepreneur Bernard Magrez (in the picture) announced in an interview with the French daily newspaper "Sud Ouest" that his son Philippe, 63, will be his successor. Magrez owns over 40 wineries with more than 1,000 hectares of vineyard area in France, Chile, Uruguay, California, Spain, and Japan, including classified Châteaux such as Pape Clément****. Philippe Magrez has been working in the corporate group for over 40 years and is one of the shareholders. As a sales expert, he has expanded the North American business in recent years and recently took over responsibility for exports to China. He has also been managing Château Plaisance in St. Emilion since 2005.
Bernard Magrez founded the company in 1961 with the purchase of a port wine house, which he named Pitters. Later, he created one of the most successful branded wines from Bordeaux with Malesan, but increasingly focused on premium wineries such as Fombrauge (Saint-Émillion), La Tour Carnet (Médoc), and Clos Haut-Peyraguey (Sauternes).
When Magrez plans to hand over responsibility to his son is currently unknown. In the interview with "Sud-Ouest," he did not provide further details about the handover process.
