The world-famous Italian winemaker Angelo Gaja from Piedmont has founded a joint venture on Mount Etna with his colleague Alberto Graci from Sicily. Together they want to cultivate about 21 hectares of vineyards on the southwest side of the volcano in Biancavilla with a joint operation. Further areas are to be added, reported the Sicilian information portal www.cronachedigusto.it. According to the report, the areas are currently planted with the indigenous grape varieties Carricante and Nerello Mascalese. "I have been interested in doing something there for a long time," he told the portal, explaining his decision. Graci and Gaja met in 2015, and since then the legendary northern Italian has often spent time there. Gaja and Graci, a star winemaker from Etna, have now founded a company together.

Angelo Gaja's daughter Gaia, who is also responsible for the Ca' Marcanda winery in Tuscany, told "Wine Spectator" about the deal: "We have always found the wines from Etna very interesting for many reasons. The wines from there are complex, delicate and elegant. But we would never have ventured into Sicily alone. We lack the specific, deep knowledge to make wine in this region." The vineyards on the north side of Etna have long been very expensive because many investors have bought land there. These slopes were previously considered less interesting. This business could change that.
