In the future, labels of wines from Alsace must contain uniform information on the residual sugar content according to the EU regulation. This must be indicated for wines of the "Alsace" and "Vin d'Alsace" appellations from "dry" to "semi-dry" and "lieblich" to "sweet". This indication can be given by one of the four terms mentioned or by a scale with the four terms clearly pointed to by an arrow. The labelling obligation also applies to communication material such as advertising, brochures, price lists and invoices.
Here, "dry" defines a maximum residual sugar content of 4 grams per litre, "semi-dry" contains 5 to 12 grams of residual sugar and "lieblich" 13 to 45 grams. The category "sweet" is used when there are more than 45 grams of residual sugar.
The Alsace wine association CIVA (Conseil Interprofessionel des Vins d'Alsace) supported a corresponding government decree and thus expects more transparency and comprehensibility for consumers.
