The Thermenregion will be the last Austrian wine-growing region to install a DAC system with the 2023 vintage. This completes the process of legal protection of wines typical of their origin in Austria, which began 20 years ago. Chris Yorke, Managing Director of Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM) is pleased "that we have now been able to complete the DAC family with the Thermenregion. The DAC system is an Austrian success story: it allows each region to legally protect its origin-typical wine styles. This is enormously important in the wine world, because grape varieties are interchangeable, origins are not." The process was particularly lengthy in the wine-growing region south of Vienna and was hotly debated because the interests of small direct marketers and export-oriented businesses had to be taken into account.

The Thermenregion DAC will be based on the pyramid of origin with the levels Gebietswein - Ortswein - Riedenwein. For single vineyard wines the leading varieties Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay are permitted. For the local wines, Pinot Gris and Zweigelt (Rotburger) are also bottled under the DAC seal. The local wines of Thermenregion bear the designation of origin Perchtoldsdorf, Gumpoldskirchen, Tattendorf, Wiener Neustadt and Bad Vöslau. The wine varieties for the regional wines Thermenregion DAC (without naming the municipality or vineyard) were expanded to include Neuburger, Gemischter Satz and Blauer Portugieser in keeping with the tradition of great diversity. The introduction of the DAC is accompanied by a new marketing strategy.
