A 77-year-old man from southern France survived for three days in a gorge thanks to his wine purchases after he had an accident while riding his bicycle. This is reported by the magazines The Drinks Business and Entrevue

The retiree was on his way back from shopping and missed a turn on a winding road. He fell down a steep slope 40 meters deep, which ends in a riverbed. He tried several times to climb out of the gorge but kept slipping back down. At every sound from the road above him, he called for help, but no one heard him.

He was trapped in the gorge for three days. He secured his survival only with the food supplies he had purchased earlier. He also drank some bottles of wine that had survived the fall.

On the third day, road workers finally heard his calls and alerted the rescue services. A helicopter freed the accident victim from the gorge. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and hypothermia. The doctors certified him with remarkable resilience, which kept him "alive in the cold and damp, almost without food and water.".
