The actor and winemaker Sam Neill has passed away at the age of 78. Born in Ireland, Sir Nigel John Dermot Neill became known worldwide for his roles in films like Jurassic Park and series like Peaky Blinders. In addition to his acting career, he was also regarded as one of New Zealand's most renowned winemakers.

In 1993, Neill, along with partners, founded the winery Two Paddocks in Central Otago on New Zealand's South Island and planted his first vines in the Gibbston Valley. The organically managed winery developed into one of the region's flagship establishments and focuses almost exclusively on Pinot Noir, complemented by small amounts of Riesling. The top cuvée is named "Proprietor's Reserve.".

Neill was annoyed that his wines were often perceived as products of a prominent actor. He firmly rejected the term "Celebrity Winemaker." He stated in a 2013 interview with the British magazine The Drinks Business that he had been making wine for decades and did not want to be lumped together with prominent hobbyists. His aim was to produce distinctive Pinot Noirs with the signature of Central Otago – rather than appealing, fruit-driven wines according to international mainstream taste. He also considered New Zealand's Pinot Noirs to be of excellent quality and often underrated compared to Burgundy.

In 2023, Sam Neill publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with leukemia.
