The South Tyrolean Sommelier Mirko Rainer sabred 96 sparkling wine bottles in one minute. With this, he set a new world record, clearly surpassing his own record of 68 bottles from 2023.
Rainer manages several restaurants in Switzerland and set the first world record in 2014 by sabering 64 bottles. The terms "sabering" and "sabrage" derive from the French word "sabre" for saber. To open a sparkling wine bottle with it, the saber is slid along the body of the bottle and struck against the lip at the end of the neck. This causes the neck of the bottle along with the cork and wire cage to break off explosively.
The record sabrage took place in front of an audience at the Winkler sparkling wine factory in Girlan. A jury officially witnessed the record. The subsequent auction of the sabred bottles and the saber raised 14,275 euros. The proceeds went to the non-profit organization Kinderherz Südtirol.
