Researchers have found a grape seed that is about 600 years old in the latrine of a medieval hospital in Valenciennes (Northern France). They then analyzed the DNA of the seed and were able to demonstrate a direct genetic match with today's Pinot Noir vines. This provides the first genetic evidence of a continuous connection between medieval and modern viticulture. However, it cannot be definitively determined whether the grapes were consumed as table fruit or used for winemaking at that time. Nevertheless, the find highlights the long tradition of viticulture in France.

For the study published in the journal "Nature Communications," a total of 54 grape seeds were examined, dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. The results show that winemakers had already been deliberately using vegetative propagation for at least 600 years. In this process, cuttings from selected vines are used to preserve desired characteristics over generations. While there were indications of this in historical sources, genetic evidence had been lacking until now.

Furthermore, the data suggest that this practice may be even older and could date back to the Iron Age. At the same time, the analyses provide evidence of an intense exchange of grape varieties over long distances, especially during Roman antiquity. Genetic connections lead, among other places, to Spain, the Balkans, as well as regions of the Caucasus and the Middle East.
