Last year, 7.6 million hectolitres of wine passed the official quality wine test. According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), this corresponds to an increase of five per cent compared to 2018. The total volume in 2019 has thus reached the level of 2017.

White wines accounted for 64 percent of the German quality and Prädikat wine production. Their share had risen by one percentage point compared to the previous year. Red wines accounted for 24 per cent of production, which was one per cent less than in 2018. Rosé wines were unchanged at 12 per cent.

According to the DWI, the share of dry wines remained at a consistently high level of 48 per cent in 2019. Of the remaining quality-tested wines, 20 per cent were bottled semi-dry, 27 per cent "lieblich" and four per cent in the sweet flavour.
