About 1,300 ha of vineyards in Franconia as well as at Lake Constance in Bavaria currently have to be irrigated. This was announced by the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture during a debate in the state parliament. Due to climate change, however, about 2,000 of the current 6,300 ha of vineyards will have to be temporarily supplied with water in the future, the ministry predicts. This corresponds to about one third of the vineyards in Bavaria. Currently it is about 20 per cent. Due to the increasing drought, an annual water demand of about 1.3 to 1.5 million cubic metres arises only for viticulture. Currently, the winegrowers mainly use rainwater as well as water from streams, rivers and more and more from reservoirs. According to the report by the Ministry of the Environment, however, this water demand "can no longer be met in all places and at all times".
