The concentration process in German viticulture is progressing. As reported by the German Wine Institute (DWI) on the basis of surveys by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of farms cultivating vineyards in Germany fell by 20 percent to 15,151 in 2020 compared to 2010. The area of vineyards cultivated by them, on the other hand, grew by three percent to 99,854 hectares. According to the national average, a German winegrowing enterprise cultivated 6.6 hectares, which corresponds to an increase of 29 percent compared to 2010.

According to the Destatis surveys, around ten percent of the German vineyard area (9,579 hectares) was cultivated organically by 921 farms in 2020. This corresponds to an increase of 21 percent in the number of farms and 27 percent in the area since 2016.
