This year, 175 wine producers submitted 251 wines from Germany and 13 from Austria for the International Scheurebe Award. Awards were given to 17 wineries in six categories. The competition, which was announced for the first time last year on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the grape variety Scheurebe, is organised by the trade journals "Das deutsche Weinmagazin" and "Wein+Markt".

99 Scheurebe wines came from the 2016 vintage, 51 from 2015 and a few from older vintages. The prices of the wines submitted are pleasing: Almost two thirds of the samples are between five and ten euros per bottle.

In the category "sparklingand semi-sparkling wines", the Ludwig Wagner & Sohn wine house from the Palatinate won first place with a dry sparkling wine from traditional bottle fermentation.

The trophy in the "Dry" category went to Weingut Stephan Strobel (Franconia) for a 2016 Sommeracher Katzenkopf quality wine.

In the "Semi-dry/Feinherb" category, the Tobias Becker winery (Rheinhessen) was unbeatable with its 2016 quality wine.

The category "Mild/Lieblich" belonged to the Spätlese wines and was won by the Raßkopf-Hofmann winery (Pfalz) with a 2016 Dürkheimer Hochbenn Spätlese. This wine also achieved the highest score of the entire competition with an average rating of 17.6 points. The winner of the "Auslese" category, a wine from the 2016 vintage from theDengler-Seyler winery (Pfalz), was only just behind in the expert jury's assessment.

And finally, another trophy, donated by Zwiesel Kristallglas, was awarded in the "Edelsüß" category. Contrary to all expectations, the Trcokenbeerenauslese wines were surpassed by a 2015 Beerenauslese from Weingut Wolf (Pfalz).

The jury's special prize for 2017 went to a 1975 Trockenbeerenauslese from the Dürkheimer Spielberg vineyard, which was entered in the race by the Pfälzer Vier Jahreszeiten Winzer eG.
