A
magnum bottle of
Dom Pérignon 1961, filled for the wedding of Lady
Diana and the then Prince of
Wales Charles, will be auctioned on December 11 at the Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen. The bottle is part of a limited special edition and was specially disgorged in 1981 for the
royal wedding.
Its special label recalls the
grand event on July 29, 1981. The ceremony took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, followed by an elaborate celebration at Buckingham Palace.
Thomas Rosendahl, head of the wine department at Bruun Rasmussen, emphasizes the extraordinary significance of this
champagne: The 1961
Dom Pérignon is considered one of the
most sought-after and best vintages of the house. That such a special edition is coming to market is "extraordinarily rare." According to Rosendahl, it is not only a highly regarded
champagne but also a valuable piece of cultural history, as the bottle was created specifically for a historically significant
royal event.
Therefore, the auction house expects great international interest from wine collectors and fans of the British
royal family. Proceeds are estimated to be between 68,000 and 80,000 euros.
