Kaltern is a real joy to visit at the moment - especially if you're a discerning, curious wine lover. After the turnaround from mass production to high-quality wines in the 90s, the first 10 years of the new millennium have seen a great deal of change, especially in terms of the independence and authenticity of the wines. On the one hand, this is due to the general trend in South Tyrol. In Kaltern, it is also due to the fact that many new, ambitious wineries are enriching the scene. And one thing is noticeable in South Tyrol's best-known wine village: It is getting greener and greener. The number of certified organic wineries has now grown to seven and, just as importantly, the (still) 'conventional' wineries are very open to ecologically sustainable practices, because they realize that this is good for the quality and independence of the wines. Here is an overview of what the wine village of Kaltern currently has to offer. Part 2 looks at the wineries in the villages of Prey, Sankt Nikolaus, Oberplanitzing and Unterplatzing, as well as the wineries on the lake.
