If we are outing ourselves as Silvaner fans here, it is certainly not the first time we have done so. Nevertheless, we have always been of the opinion that Silvaner cannot quite keep up with Riesling at the top. But when we look at our current tasting results, we have to start asking ourselves whether this thesis can still be upheld. If we also consider that Silvaner hardly plays a role in the list of grape varieties in most wine-growing regions and, except in Rheinhessen and Franconia, is only rarely considered for top wines, the result is all the more impressive.

Another factor contributing to our enthusiasm for the variety is that it can give great pleasure in all weight classes and quality levels. This is even more true since the wines have become finer and more polished across the board. The somewhat rustic, sometimes even ponderous character that was often associated with Silvaner in the past has been thoroughly driven out of it, at least by the committed wineries. If we have anything at all to criticise, it is the slight tendency of some producers towards a certain residual sweetness in nominally dry wines - and that in Franconia of all places! But well, some consumers like it a little more pleasing. But our secret or now slowly not so secret favourite variety does not need this frippery.

We have tasted over 250 Silvaner wines in the last few months, the best of which we present here. Links to all the wines, their producers and detailed tasting notes can be found at the end of each list.
