What is corkage fee?
You paycorkage money in a restaurant to drink a wine that you have brought yourself.
Sometimes the focus of a visit to a restaurant is not the food, but the wine. Sometimes, however, the wine list does not offer what you want, despite good or even very good cuisine. Or you have a certain wine in your cellar that you would like to enjoy with a dish or menu in the restaurant in order to save yourself the trouble of cooking (which you may not be able to do at an adequate level).
In this case, it is best to ask when booking a table whether you can bring the wine yourself if you pay an appropriate corkage fee - for the service effort and as symbolic compensation for the lost profit. The usual amount per cork (i.e. per bottle) is in the range of 5 to 15 euros. In return, the wine is professionally tempered and served; the glasses are also provided by the restaurant. And the host or the sommelier is happy if he is also allowed to try a sip.
