What is biodynamic viticulture?
Biodynamic viticulture follows the anthroposophical approach of Rudolf Steiner and includes a holistic view of the vineyard as an ecosystem as well as a spiritual world view. The cosmic calendar and energy flows play a role here, and the focus is on strengthening the resistance of the vine and its natural environment.
Only biological pesticides are permitted, organic fertilisation (with manure, often from the vineyard's own livestock) and vineyard planting are obligatory. Species diversity(biodiversity) in the vineyard and the use of beneficial organisms are of great importance. As far as possible, vineyard work should be carried out without machines, but rather only by people or with animals.
As a speciality, biodynamic viticulture uses special home-made "homeopathic" preparations (horn silica, horn manure, herbal infusions) in addition to organic plant strengthening agents. For this, powdered quartz or cow dung is filled into cow horns, which are then buried in the ground for six months to store the cosmic energy. The horn silica or horn manure is then dynamised by mixing it rhythmically with water and then sprayed finely in the vineyard.
Biodynamic viticulture goes further than organic viticulture and is the "strictest" form of organic viticulture. Biodynamically produced wines can be recognised by the seal of the Demeter Association, which defines the requirements for biodynamic agriculture and viticulture.
