Today, white Burgundy varieties can be found in a quality and variety of styles probably never before seen in Germany. For many local wine enthusiasts, everything but Riesling is still considered secondary when it comes to white wine, but the wider public has long preferred Burgundy varieties.

This is not surprising. Especially at the grassroots level and among mid-range wines, Burgundies are certainly more accessible than many Rieslings. At the top, however, things have changed in recent years and are increasingly giving way to coolness, finesse, race and tension.

This development basically applies to all varieties, but it is Chardonnay that is benefiting the most, as it is slowly beginning to show its superiority in Germany as well, especially when it comes to subtlety. In this area, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Auxerrois can rarely hold a candle to it. On the other hand, Pinot Blanc (and not to forget Auxerrois) can be a great pleasure at the base, while Pinot Gris can handle melt and power better, and sometimes even needs them to show its full potential.

So in the Burgundy family, almost everyone will find something they like, maybe even something that excites them. And those who come away empty-handed remain Riesling freaks. Not so bad either.

We have summarised the results of many hundreds of samples in this BEST OF. Since we list here and as always as PDF can only list the best examples, it is advisable to follow the links behind the headings, which lead to all the wines tasted and their detailed descriptions. There is far too much good wine even below the top to stick only to those with the high points.

Note: We have deliberately left out the 2018s, which we will only present separately in the next BEST OF, when the picture is more complete. However, the results so far are also available in the wine guide.
