Even if it has been somewhat forgotten, especially in the German-speaking countries, due to the development of white wine qualities there: Friuli is still a paradise for white wine lovers.

Of course, you can also find large quantities of simple everyday wines here, but at the top, completely independent, characterful and sometimes even extremely long-lasting drops are produced. Their predominantly bone-dry style predestines them to be versatile food companions just as much as their in most cases not very fruit-driven style, which clearly distinguishes them - largely independent of the respective variety - from most wines of Germany or Austria.

The most important of these varieties are, on the one hand, the internationally widespread Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, but from indigenous varieties such as Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia Istriana, absolutely equal and certainly no less exciting wines are pressed here. For the rarer dessert wines, producers mostly use Picolit or Verduzzo Friuliano.

Friuli is also home to a lively natural wine scene. Unfortunately, the best protagonists of this movement, of all people, preferred not to present any wines. However, as always, we will try to supply the missing top producers in the coming weeks. In total, we tasted around 400 wines for this BEST OF.
