The Silvaner scene is still on the move. The fact that the winegrowers of Rheinhessen in particular are catching up more and more with the Franconians is slowly becoming nothing new; but even within Franconia, the mood of optimism continues to prevail. Every year we discover new, young winegrowers with remarkable wines, while long-established wineries often continue to improve.
After the excellent Silvaner year of 2014, this was also clearly noticeable in the more difficult 2015. In the past, such warm vintages would have produced many overly fat and alcoholic wines, especially at the peak. In the meantime, the best producers have such conditions under control, as we were able to convince ourselves by tasting many top 15 Silvaner wines - another welcome new trend. They are always quite powerful, but very rarely as heavy and powerful as in previous hot years.
In 2016, Silvaner was clearly in favour again, which is also reflected in an unprecedented series of top wines. It is particularly striking that these are by no means only Grosse Gewächse or similar prestigious wines; also considerably less expensive Silvaner, for example from the mid-range quality lines of the leading wineries, but also from lesser-known producers, showed an unprecedented level in the tasting and sometimes landed in the top positions.
