Right from the start, wine lovers and experts alike were not quite in agreement about the 2016 vintage. The reactions ranged from unfounded enthusiasm to complete rejection. In fact, the range of qualities is wider than ever.

General judgements about a vintage are generally difficult or even nonsensical, but in this case they are completely impossible. The year undoubtedly holds some disappointments in store, and some wines are simply not as good as in the best years, but they are still very good. At the same time, however, we have tasted some of the greatest dry Rieslings we have ever encountered. The best wines of the vintage combine expressiveness with elegance and finesse in a way that we have hardly experienced even in the best vintages of the last decades.

However, this has only limited to do with the vintage and its conditions. Rather, at the top of German viticulture there is now an elite of winemakers for whom no effort seems great enough and no goal too ambitious. And they are becoming more and more numerous. German wine patriots are always quick to use the term "world class". Sometimes too quickly. Here it's true.

We have tasted around 1300 dry German Rieslings in the last few months, of which we can present to you here and as PDF only the absolute top. It is therefore well worth taking a closer look at the other results. Links to all wines with a rating of 80 points or more can be found at the end of the list, sorted by region.
