The Ribera del Duero stretches for well over 100 kilometres along the Duero from San Esteban de Gormaz in the east to Valladolid in the west. The vineyards are located on different soils of the Castilian Plateau and range from around 700 to over 1000 metres above sea level. The variety of wines is therefore great. They are actually all powerful, but the styles range from thick and compote to pithy and firm to elegant and fine.

It doesn't help to orientate oneself purely on the alcohol content. Even with 15% alcohol, some wines are still taut and stimulating, while others with significantly lower alcohol levels can already appear one-sidedly jammy. Even if the majority of producers are still indulging in a compote-warm style that seems to be extremely popular with domestic and American critics, there are surprisingly many wineries today that are making decidedly finer, more complex wines that are full of character. A few of them have big names, but many are still relatively unknown; some have only existed for a short time. It is definitely worth looking out for them. The wine scene in the region has never been more exciting.
