In terms of quality, 2017 was a year of extremes for the dry German Rieslings, the likes of which we have not experienced for a long time. At the top, we tasted some of the best dry Rieslings ever made; on the other hand, even individual Grosse Gewächse were so disappointing that we would not recommend them even if they were only the basic wines of the respective estates. All in all, a rather unusual number of nominally great dry site wines remained at a level that, even with goodwill, can at least no longer be described as Grosses Gewächs-worthy.

Nevertheless, we tasted so many very good, first-class and also great dry Rieslings this year that our BEST OF can only represent a small part of what Riesling lovers can expect from this vintage. Even among the wines without the highest standards, we liked several so much that we awarded them the title of "favourite wine". For us, these wines marked with a heart are ideal representatives of their respective origin and quality level, which we would buy ourselves immediately. If you are looking for them, you can't really go wrong - as long as you share our taste to some extent. In contrast to the point ratings, where we are so objective and uninfluenced by our preferences, hearts are only given to those wines that we like best of all.

So it is definitely worth following the links to all the wines tasted and digging a little deeper. We tasted well over 1200 dry Rieslings from Germany for this BEST OF. As always, you can find the best of them here and as PDF. Links to all the wines tasted can be found by clicking on the headings.
