Those who expect rather heavy and full-bodied wines in Sicily due to its southern location will be surprised at how elegant many of the island's dry white wines turn out to be. The rather broad range of indigenous grape varieties usually produces rather medium-bodied, restrainedly fruity, often relatively elegant and animatingly fine-spicy wines that can make excellent and versatile food companions. It is not always easy to blindly distinguish between the varieties Catarratto, Grillo, Inzolia, Carricante or Albanello. Often the taste of the wines depends more on the ageing or on their origin.

The island is by far the largest wine-growing area in Italy and therefore far less homogeneous than one might think. The vineyards range from near the coast to altitudes of 900 metres, which in itself makes for enormous differences in growing conditions. What is unmistakable, however, is the Zibibbo, a Muscat variety that stands out both in the dry and in the sweet range (especially on the island of Pantelleria) with its distinctive aroma of dried citrus fruits and its floral notes.

Another speciality is the legendary Marsala, a fortified wine that is always oxidised and can range from largely dry to extremely sweet, with the best examples being beguilingly complex, deep and long-lasting.

In total, we tasted over 120 Sicilian white wines from autochthonous varieties for this BEST OF.
