The Association of Austrian Traditional Wine Estates (ÖTW), founded in 1992, has spent the last two and a half decades trying to define the quality factor "origin" like hardly anyone else. As a result of a lengthy research process, 53 vineyard sites in the Kremstal, Traisental, Wagram and Kamptal regions were finally classified as ÖTW Erste Lage in 2010. With the recent addition of further wineries from Wien and Carnuntum, another 19 sites were added, including 12 from Wien alone.
We tasted around 120 wines from ÖTW first sites last year, including many from the new members. The result is quite impressive: not one wine of the tasting did not score at least very well; a not insignificant part can claim to be among the best wines of Austria.
