In the north of the popular German wine-growing region of Pfalz, the brothers Frank and Thomas Pfaffmann succeed in doing something special: they convince with wines of strong character that have an unmistakable profile. Each one is a homage to its terroir.

"Our wines should convince through their diversity and facets. Honestly uncomplicated in the cuvées at the base, classically Palatine in the varietal wines in the middle or mineral-complex in the site and reserve wines. It's the blend that makes it, without losing our clear signature." With this commitment, the brothers Frank and Thomas Pfaffmann invite you to their website and make it clear what their Wageck winery, now in its fourth generation, stands for: unmistakability. What once began under the leadership of Wilhelm Wageck in the small village of Bissersheim with a mixed business typical of the time - in which viticulture played a subordinate role - developed over the decades into a distinctive pillar of the Palatinate wine region. For even in the difficult beginnings, it was quality that was associated with the name Wageck. When Gunter Pfaffmann married into the family at the beginning of the 1970s, he not only brought the name of the current owners with him. He also focused even more specifically on the clear expressiveness of the wines.

Two in a row

This is a path that his sons have been following for years and have long been confidently pursuing as leaders of the traditional winery. One thing is certain: the two are not satisfied with the average. Their goal is clearly defined - they want to be among the best producers in Germany. With Burgundy as their "role model", they mainly grow Burgundy grapes, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, on soils characterised by tertiary limestone around Bissersheim. Each grape variety should show where it has grown, "and convince with its typical minerality and elegance", say the winemaking duo. What supports them in achieving their goals is the enormous potential of the different sites such as Kirchheimer Steinacker, Bissersheimer Goldberg (with its fillet pieces "Am Unteren Geisberg" and "Links am Sülzner Weg"), Bissersheimer Orlenberg and Großkarlbacher Burgweg. They all stand for distinctive, multi-layered and impressively mineral wines that can speak for themselves, because: "Our years of experience have shown us that the soils around Bissersheim are predestined for more," say Frank and Thomas Pfaffmann. The yields are low, but the grapes are optimally ripe and of the highest quality. The brothers pay tribute to this gift of nature with natural viticulture, which guarantees that this basis will be preserved in the future to shape the aroma and texture of their growths.

Quiet yet expressive

In addition, there is a balanced mixture of experience (because tradition is important to the two) and a healthy portion of gut feeling. The rest is essential craftsmanship: elaborate vineyard care, manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation, added to the valuable factor of time - all this describes the Wageck philosophy. Wine critic Marcus Hofschuster makes it sound like this: "Wageck wines tend to be quiet, usually bone dry, often yeasty in their youth, taut, yet completely unobtrusive, so that it often takes a third or fourth sip to realise how good they really are." And that is the best sign of the way to the top.
